Black can be a great colour to decorate with at Christmas. In small doses, it makes an impact and allows the decor to really pop. In this post, Black and White Christmas Family Room Decor, I share with you how to create a cozy and inviting Christmas family room, using touches of black and white. Because this colour scheme is the ultimate neutral colour scheme, it works well when added to just about any home. Best of all, it doesn’t matter whether you have neutral coloured walls or not. Our walls are a mid-tone greyish blue (click here for all our paint colours) and it’s sometimes a struggle to find colours that pair well with the blue undertones.

The Christmas tree
Our family room is small and we don’t have much space for a tree. Therefore, this 6′ flocked tree from Walmart is a perfect size. It fits neatly at the end of the sofa and makes the room feel festive. A white tree is a good choice for displaying black or dark-coloured ornaments which could become lost in a dark tree. I used a whitewashed grey tree collar for a tidy look at the base of the tree. To finish the look, I added a black and beige pillow for softness.
Tree ornaments
To the tree, I first added a white feather garland. I find this step helps to capture the golden glow of the tree lights and lends a soft, snowy look. Next, I added a black and white striped ribbon all around the tree. This brings in the black colour and adds a farmhouse style to the tree. I only added a few kinds of ornaments to the tree and they are all black and white. I used fluffy white balls that resemble snowballs, deep blue/black orbs, and my black chalkboard-paint ornaments I shared on the blog last week. The “word” ornaments (peace, Noel, jingle) are made from a Homeworks Etc kit. This is an easy and affordable way to make some charming tree decor.
The Fireplace Mantel
I wanted to experiment with an asymmetrical mantle this year. To create this look, I draped a faux fir garland from one end of the mantle to the other. I fixed it partway across so it draped down more on the right side of the fireplace. Then, I draped the garland down the right side of the mantle. Next, I added an Edison bulb light string for a touch of elegance. To get the layered garland look, I added a eucalyptus garland and a set of galvanized metal bells. To visually balance the greenery swag at the right side of the fireplace, I added a trio of white velvet stockings on the left.
On top of the mantle, I added a pair of hurricane lanterns, each with an oversized pinecone. The pinecones and garland bring in the outdoors and complement the black and white decor with their neutral tones. I added a white wooden snowflake and a cluster of cream-coloured candles to finish the look.
Other Decor Elements
To the open shelves on either side of the fireplace, I displayed mostly white decor accessories. These include candlesticks, bookends, vases, and books. Below the shelves on the right side of the fireplace, I used a mostly-black sign to balance the black television on the left side. On the sofa, I used an assortment of beige, black, and white pillows.
