I wasn’t sure how I was going to title this blog post, so I polled my family. And the words they came up with were bright, green, fresh, “plantsy”, and spring-like. Keep in mind they are all boys under the age of 16. The biggest changes I’ve made to our decor recently were to add more plants to our home, modernize with new pillows, and simplify and streamline a little. So, I settled on the words bright and fresh. I’ve always been drawn to bright, open spaces, and to me, fresh embodies plants, spring, and a sense of a new beginning. After our long, cold Ottawa winters, spring always feels like the beginning of a new life.
This spring I’m going with a “less is more” approach to decor. The simplicity gives us room to breathe and to appreciate the space and the simple joys that spring can bring, like a pot of tulips or a platter of fresh-picked spring veggies.
Front Hall
Since adding the floral wallpaper to our front hall last summer, I find that keeping the decor simple works best. You can see the wallpaper post here if you’re interested. I added just a few spring touches, including a pot of white tulips, an Easter egg wreath, a pretty bird-themed scarf, and an ironstone pitcher filled with baby’s breath. I opted for a simple black and white doormat to temper the romantic look and keep the space from looking too sweet. Every space needs a touch of black or dark wood to keep it grounded.

Living Room
I’m still in the honeymoon phase with our new IKEA Farlov loveseat, and didn’t want to add too much to this space. You can see my Farlov review here. I wanted to embrace the sunshine and the light-coloured furnishings in this space. To refresh the space for spring, I added a beautiful assortment of pillows from Tonic Living. My “green” touches were a new baby orchid plant for the coffee table and a Monstera plant for the side table. If you have a neutral living room, try mixing traditional pieces (like my silk drapes and bamboo tray) with more modern pieces (like the loveseat and pillows) to create a more dynamic look.
Dining Room
I really wanted to keep our dining room uncluttered while bringing in a sense of spring. An easy solution was to create a living centerpiece that could be enjoyed for weeks. Since the decor in our living room and dining room is neutral, the green and purples in this arrangement really draw the eye and create a focal point. On our buffet table, I displayed a tiered tray of Easter-themed items, including faux birds nests, ceramic peace doves, and ceramic bunnies. And I displayed some of my Easter canisters and mugs on the coffee cart in the corner of the room. This is a great time of year to bring out those pretty pastel-toned dishes.
Kitchen
I added touches of soft yellow and green to our kitchen to create a fresh and whimsical space. My starting point was the wreath that I created with greenery and yellow and white flowers. Then I added a ceramic latticework bowl filled with lemons, a vintage-look basket with yellow tulips and white hyacinths, a bowl of fresh artichokes, and a yellow throw blanket. It only takes five or six accents to create a colour scheme and to lend a springtime vibe to a space. I shopped my home for most of these items, only purchasing the fresh flowers and artichokes.

Breakfast Area
The first step in creating a fresh look for our kitchen and breakfast area was to thoroughly clean all the cabinets, backsplash, floors, table legs and chairs. The top three things you can do to freshen up a kitchen or eating area for spring are deep cleaning, removing clutter, and adding some fresh or faux florals or plants.
I added a big cheerful palm tree to the corner of our kitchen and added some simple touches to our kitchen table. I love simple black and white dishes for spring when combined with fresh green accents like plants and vegetables. Baby’s breath and a bunch of artichokes cost under $20 together and add a textural touch of nature. The artichokes can be eaten and the baby’s breath turned into a dried arrangement, so it’s economic and environmentally friendly.
Family Room
For our family room, I restyled the open shelves, removing all the old items, dusting, and creating new arrangements. I added new art prints on the top shelves and new plants throughout. I kept the accessories in shades of white and wicker and added some beautiful new prints below the open shelves on the right side of the room. In next week’s blog post I’m planning to share the details of my new artwork and how I restyled these shelves for a more modern look.
I was feeling a little uninspired about this space and that all changed once I gave it a good old-fashioned deep clean. I steam cleaned our sofa and ottoman and dusted/cleaned every single item in this space. All the board games went back into their cabinets, kid’s toys were sent to their rooms, and random under-the-couch items were taken care of. Then, I started to feel inspired, though I was too tired to take action right away. The next day, I added several plants, baby’s breath in a vase, and new pillows from Tonic Living. I had planned to use the dark grey windowpane pillows in the fall, but I like how they liven up the space right now. They will still be lovely in the fall, perhaps mixed with some rust coloured pillows.
Master Bedroom
I wanted to create a bright, sunny bedroom for spring. To do this, I added new bedding in shades of white, golden beige, cream, pale yellow, and black. The beautiful duvet cover and pillow shams are from Schweitzer Linen and the black and white line drawing quilt is made from fabric I purchased from Tonic Living. One of my favourite touches is the white concrete box from CB2 that I have displayed on the tray. If you like the tray, it is one of my 21 IKEA finds that look expensive. Continuing with my bright and fresh spring home tour theme, I added several plants to the bedroom and reading nook.
For my reading nook, I made a gold Himmeli mobile from a recent Crafter’s Box kit. I think it adds a pretty and sculptural touch to this corner. Added handmade and vintage items to your home can add so much warmth and personality. They help create happy spaces, no matter the size of your home.
Summary
I really hope you have enjoyed my Bright and Fresh Spring Home Tour. I’m grateful for this tour because it gave me that little push to freshen up our home for spring. Even though I kept the decor simple, our spaces feel different to me now. They’re brighter, cleaner, more alive, and they just feel like spring. I hope you’ll have the chance to add a few spring touches to your home too! For more spring tour inspiration, please visit The Ponds Farmhouse. I know you’re going to love Rachel’s beautiful home. Question – I love the aged finish on the round, curved leg side table in your reading nook. Did you do that yourself? If so, what color stain, what was the process, etc.
Thank you
Nan
Shawna Liao says
Thank you Nan, I wish I could take credit for that table, but it came that way! I linked it in my shop the post box partway through the post. To get this look, you would need a grainy wood like oak and a greyish stain like Fusion Stain and Finishing Oil in Driftwood, then add some whitewashing and distressing.
