I knew I wanted to write this blog post for a while because dining rooms can be a tricky place to decorate for the holidays. Tablescapes and table decor ideas abound on Pinterest, but there’s significantly less focus on dining room decor that doesn’t involve dining tables. In this post, I share Christmas decor details to add to your dining room now. These are details that will make your dining room feel festive and elegant and will be the perfect backdrop to your fabulous dining room tablescape. These are all ideas from my own home that I’m using this year. To see my dining room decor from last year, click here.

Sideboard Decor
A sideboard, buffet, or console table is a must have piece of furniture in any dining room. It’s so useful for storing table linens and serveware, plus the top surface is a great area for display. Traditionally it was used to place trays and tureens of food, but is used primarily for decor now. I added some open shelves a couple years ago and it’s a great place to display my collection of white dishes.
For the holidays, I added a sparkly table runner and a white feather garland as a base for a ceramic house display. I wanted to create the look of a snowy village, so I used ceramic houses in different shapes and sizes and added galvanized metal and mercury glass trees. Both the ceramic houses and trees make excellent collectibles and can be used in so many different ways year after year. If you don’t have a feather garland, you could use artificial snow or polyester fil.
Open Shelves
I like to keep things simple, so I simply added some boughs of faux greenery and three mini-wreaths below the open shelves. A single wooden snowflake further emphasizes the winter theming. I’m keeping my “Gather” sign from KT Inspired Home up for the holidays, but a Christmas-themed sign would be lovely.
If you don’t have open shelves, the area above a buffet is a great play to display a large sign or a mirror. Click here for the tutorial on how to make and install these open shelves.
Small Bookshelf or Table
Dining rooms often have space for another small table or bookshelf. This painted piece (see the blog post here) displays my Rae Dunn collection and is the perfect place to hang a mirror. I think every dining room needs a beautiful mirror. At Christmas, I usually hang a wreath on the mirror or hang a garland over the top of the mirror. However, this year, I added a mini tree on either side of the mirror, adding a green velvet ribbon to the ceramic urns. My other holiday touches include my collection of vintage brass candlesticks, a framed Christmas sign, and whimsical concrete pinecones.
We are about halfway through my post, Christmas decor details to add to your dining room, and I’m excited to share how I decorated my coffee bar.
Coffee Bar
I love decorating this little coffee bar for the seasons as you can see in my post, Coffee Bar Décor Through the Seasons. To create your own coffee bar, click here. I added some faux greenery stems to the mug rack and above the wood sign. Then I tied some black and green check bows on the handles of the mugs for a whimsical touch. Next, I added wood snowflakes, hung a string of galvanized metal bells, and added a Let it Snow sign.
On the coffee cart table, I brought in some more touches of nature with a basket of pinecones and a faux mini tree. A friend of mine gave me the little Noel sign and I think it’s the perfect finishing touch.
Dining Table
I’m not ready to set my table for Christmas dinner yet, so in the meantime, I’ve added a simple centerpiece of faux greenery and pinecones on top of a striped table runner. This is a really tidy way to decorate a dining room table and allows family members to use this space for a simple dinner, homework, or a games night.
I will share this year’s Christmas tablescape in December. In the meantime, for a little inspiration, you can see my tablescape from last Christmas. You can see that I used many of the same pieces I used in this year’s decor- the pinecones and greenery boughs for example. My favourite touch was the ornament/greenery boughs on the chair backs.
