I love the look of farmhouse-style painted wood Christmas ornaments and decided to create three different options for this blog post. However, the possibilities are endless by changing the paint colour and stencils used. In this post, DIY painted wood ornaments 3 ways, I share the complete instructions for all three ornaments. These will definitely add a little farmhouse charm to your holiday decor this year.
The three projects include chalkboard wood slice ornaments, tree stencil wood slice ornaments, and holiday word block ornaments.

Instructions for the DIY Painted Wood Ornaments 3 Ways
Chalkboard Wood Slice Christmas Ornaments
Supplies and Tools
- Pre-cut wood slices– I purchased these from Michaels (bulk packs are sold in store)
- Drill and small drill bit (about 1/8″), if your wood slices don’t already have holes
- 320 grit sandpaper
- Cotton cloth
- Chalkboard paint, I used Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint in Racoon Fur
- Small artist’s paintbrush
- Black and white baker’s twine, I purchased mine from RopeShop.ca
- Chalk or chalkboard marker
Directions
- Drill holes about 1/8″ in diameter for the twine hanger. I place a piece of scrap wood underneath the wood slice so I don’t damage my table when the drill bit pops through.
- Lightly sand both sides of the ornament, spending extra time around the drill hole.
- Wipe the sawdust away with a clean cotton cloth.
- Apply a single coat of the chalkboard paint with an artist’s paintbrush and allow to dry.
- Cut a 7″ piece of twine, thread it through the drill hole in the ornament, then tie a knot in the twine.
- Let family members write special messages to each other with chalk or chalkboard markers.
Tree Stencil Wood Slice Christmas Ornaments
Supplies and Tools
- Pre-cut wood slices– I purchased these from Michaels (bulk packs are sold in store)
- Drill and small drill bit (about 1/8″), if your wood slices don’t already have holes
- 320 grit sandpaper
- Cotton cloth
- Fusion Mineral Paint in French Eggshell and Casement
- Small artist’s paintbrush
- Light grey and white baker’s twine, I purchased mine from RopeShop.ca
- Tree (or other) stencil, I used the Martha Stewart Holiday Stencil set
- Stencil brush, about a half-inch flat-bottomed brush
- Apply two coats of Fusion in French Eggshell with an artist’s paintbrush and allow to dry between coats and following the final coat.
- Place the stencil on top of the French Eggshell finish and apply the Fusion paint in Casement using a stencil brush and a stamping motion. If your stencil has an adhesive, make sure to carefully smooth it onto the wood surface prior to painting. If your stencil is not adhesive then you can tape it in place with painter’s tape or just be sure to hold it in place while you stencil. One coat of Casement should be sufficient.
- Cut a 7″ piece of twine, thread it through the drill hole in the ornament, then tie a knot in the twine.
Holiday Word Block Christmas Ornaments
Supplies and Tools
This is the easiest project of the three to plan as all the supplies you need come in this DIY Mini Sign Ornaments kit from Homeworks ETC. These adorable kits are only $5 CAD each. Homeworks ETC has the cutest sign kits and tiered tray styling kits with signs, book stacks, tags, and other adorable accessories. And they carry a full selection of Fusion Mineral Paint products.
The kit contains a pre-sanded wood block, word stencil, and foam brush. To make the ornaments I have shown, you will also need:
- Drill and small drill bit (about 1/8″)
- Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash or Coal Black for the base colour and Casement for the letter colour
- Small foam brush like the one included in the kit
- Black and white baker’s twine, I purchased mine from RopeShop.ca
Directions
- Drill holes about 1/8″ in diameter for the twine hanger. I place a piece of scrap wood underneath the wood block so I don’t damage my table when the drill bit pops through.
- Apply two coats of Fusion in Ash or Coal Black with a foam brush and allow to dry between coats and following the final coat.
- Make sure the paint is fully dry before proceeding, then smooth the adhesive stencil on top of the paint finish and apply the Fusion paint in Casement using the foam brush provided. I used one coat, but you may find that you can minimize paint bleeding by applying 2 thin coats.
- Carefully remove the adhesive stencil; if any small bits are stuck on the wood block, wait until the paint is dry and use a toothpick or tweezers to remove the remaining pieces of adhesive.
- Cut a 7″ piece of twine, thread it through the drill hole in the ornament, then tie a knot in the twine.
I love how these ornaments look together as a group, but I did divide them between our two main Christmas trees. I added the wood slices and word block ornaments to our black and white themed tree in our family room, and the tree stencil ornaments to our large living room tree. They add a handmade and whimsical character to our trees.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about my DIY painted wood ornaments 3 ways and I hope I have helped inspire you to create your own farmhouse-style Christmas ornaments. If you love handmade ornaments, you may also be interested in my post, DIY Handmade Christmas Heart Ornaments.
