Easter is less than two weeks away now, and even though it will be just our immediate family gathering for this special occasion, it is one of my favourite times to decorate. This year, I used only items I already had at home, and I’ve geared this post to those of you that also may need to use only what you have. In this Easter home tour post, I walk you through our living room, dining room, and family room. Additionally, I show you 12 easy décor ideas that you can copy or modify however you like.
Living Room
We begin the Easter home tour in our living room, where I utilized a soft palette of mostly creams, whites, greys, and greens. Floral touches were kept very simple with stems of olive branches (in windowpane vases flanking the clock), apple blossom branches (on the coffee table), and lamb’s ear stems (beside the piano).
Idea #1 – Add a cute Easter bunny figurine
I used an understated white ceramic Easter bunny on our coffee table. I think I need to add to my bunny collection because it certainly adds a sweet and whimsical touch. I’ve also seen some really cute fabric and straw bunnies.
Idea #2 – Display a pretty Easter basket
This grapevine and moss basket really brings the feeling of the outdoors and freshness of the forest into our home. I love the rustic look and how it contrasts with its more refined surroundings. I filled the basket with some faux robin’s egg nest that I purchased for last year’s tablescape.
Dining Room
I had some fun in our dining room, adding shades of pink and orange with Easter eggs and faux carrots. Our dining room is kind of my play area where I can experiment with different décor ideas. We use the space for special meals and celebrations and I always like to have a seasonal tablescape in place. Additionally, I often enjoy my morning tea or coffee in this space as it’s away from the clutter of the kitchen. For this reason, I tend to keep the décor in here calm and subtle.
Idea #3 – Add an Easter wreath to a mirror or wall
I added an Easter egg wreath to the arched mirror in our dining room. The Easter eggs are in several shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green. I love how the blue eggs tie in with the colour I painted the back of the shelf unit the mirror rests on. Additionally, the accent colour in the dining room tablescape is pink and ties into the pink eggs in the wreath. You could use another type of Easter wreath or just a spring themed wreath that you could leave up for several months.
Idea #4 – Add a pretty Easter or floral pillow
Would you believe I don’t own any Easter pillows? It’s shocking considering how many pillows I own. I definitely need to remedy that situation eventually! I used a beautiful floral Magnolia blossom pillow to bring a touch of spring to the space. I’ve seen some adorable bunny and Easter egg pillows that would compliment any Easter décor. I placed this pillow on a side chair, but you could also place it in a basket. I find that pillows make any space that much cozier.
Idea #5 – Find a cute printable to use as décor inspiration
I often look to my favourite bloggers and digital Etsy shops for free or affordable seasonal printables. I found this “Carrot Patch” printable from the Etsy shop, The Paper Wildflower. It’s worth paying a few dollars for a high-quality instant-download printable. On Etsy, you can search through hundreds of images to find exactly what you’re looking for. I keep a few 8” by 10” frames handy to display seasonal printable art. On each side of the carrot patch printable, I added a terra cotta pot painted pink and filled with faux carrots. To read about how to easily paint terra cotta pots, you can read my post, Easy DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots.
Idea #6 – Create an Easter centerpiece
I have a little décor secret to share with you. My Easter home tour centerpiece is my Valentine’s Day centerpiece with the addition of pink Easter eggs. That’s right, I used the same seeded Eucalyptus garland and pink flowers that I previously used for V-day last month! Investing in a good quality, greenery garland is a great idea because you can change it up each season. For summer, I could add lemons or fresh flowers, for fall, I could add white and green pumpkins, and for Christmas, I could add fresh evergreen boughs and pinecones or perhaps beautiful fresh roses. There really are limitless possibilities.
Idea #7 – Create a festive place setting
I love the idea of reusing things I already have, and have used my bunny plates for three years in a row. Every year, the colour scheme is a little different though. This year I decided to use a soft pink colour, picking up on some of the pink accents in the bunny plates. I added a hand-painted egg (see my egg-painting post here) resting on a nest of Spanish moss inside a mini birdcage. My secret tip here is to visit online wedding shops to find table décor items like these birdcages from WeddingStar.
Family Room
Our family room is located right off our kitchen and this area is the busiest in our home. We have lots of cozy seating here and because the boys are fairly young, I tend to keep most of the seasonal décor on the walls or out of reach. The tray on the ottoman can easily be moved for family board game nights or arm-wrestling matches!
Idea #8 – Choose a soft colour scheme for your space
Our family room is decorated in soft shades of grey, blue, and white. For Easter, I added a little more blue, aqua, and green. Notice that the colour scheme here is slightly different from the living room palette and quite different from the dining room pinks and oranges. The thing that ties all the spaces together is the use of pastel colours, neutrals, and I’ve used the Easter egg motif throughout. For your space- choose 2-3 colours plus neutrals as your Easter colour scheme. Using analogous colours (those next to each other on the colour wheel) creates a soothing and harmonious palette. That’s why I love blue and green together so much.
Idea #9 – Fill an apothecary jar with eggs or candy
I use apothecary jars in many rooms of our home- in the bathroom for soaps and bath salts, in the kitchen for treats and candy bar essentials (candy is essential, right?), and in our main living spaces for seasonal décor like Easter eggs, faux succulents, or seashells. For Easter, you could fill jars with faux eggs, faux bird’s nests, faux carrots, or Easter candy. You can add one of these just about anywhere.
Idea #10 – Create some DIY Easter egg vases
Check out last week’s blog post for all the details on how to make this DIY Easter Egg Vase Display. Placing a vase on either side of the fireplace creates visual balance. Additionally, the coloured eggs create a soft, fresh colour palette and tie in with other elements in the space.
Idea #11 – DIY an Easter banner
I normally have these banners for sale in my Etsy shop (which is temporarily closed), but you could make one using burlap, a stencil, and some craft paint. I would love to share this project with you all soon! Any Easter themed banner could be hung from the mantle. I doubled up my banner with a garland I made with twine and wood beads. It was as simple as stringing wood bead on a piece of twine- I used the repeating pattern little-medium-little-medium-little-little-medium for the bead sizes.
Idea #12 – Sprinkle whimsical touches on shelves
Our open shelves (click here to see the open shelf tutorial) are usually styled in neutral tones, so it’s easy to add little touches of seasonal décor. I like the idea of adding some little faux bird’s nests. It’s something children will really notice and enjoy seeing. Anything whimsical, such as bunnies, carrots, or chicks would also be just as endearing.
I hope you have enjoyed my Easter home tour and will be inspired to try some of my ideas in your home. Remember, these are just a few of my own ideas- I bet you’ll have some other fabulous ideas of your own and I’d absolutely love to hear about them in the comments.
