Have I ever shared that I have a little fabric addiction? I have quite the stash of fabric, and recently decided that I needed to make a dent in that stash. Of course, the ultimate goal is to be able to buy new fabric, right? I had purchased a lovely, thick synthetic felt a couple of years ago. I purchased it with the intent to make Christmas stockings, but I haven’t yet gotten around to it. Since I have always wanted to make a felt leaf wreath, I decided I could spare a little of the felt considering I initially purchased enough to make at least 30 stockings. Winter is a great time to make this wreath as the cutting and assembly is a comforting past time and the result is a soft and cozy wreath. In this post, I share with you my Easy DIY felt leaf wreath with full instructions.

I hope you’ll raid your own fabric stash for this project- any thick synthetic or wool felt will do. You could even make your own felt from old wool sweaters. And, of course you can make it from any colour of felt your heart desires. The finished dimensions of this wreath are 16″ by 16″ by 2.5″.
The best part about this wreath is that you can complete it in only one hour. I think this would be a great project to complete with a group of girlfriends because it uses readily available material and supplies and it’s simple enough not to interfere with lively conversation and fun.

Supplies For The Easy DIY Felt Leaf Wreath
- Leaf template, 8.5″ by 11″ white cardstock, printer, scissors
- One 14″ diameter foam wreath frame
- A 15′ long strip of natural cotton muslin or ribbon, 2.5″ wide; multiple pieces is fine; cut on the bias works best
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- One quarter yard cream felt fabric (54″ wide), synthetic or wool
- A sharp pencil
- Fabric scissors
- Ribbon for hanging
Directions For The Easy DIY Felt Leaf Wreath
Before you start, plug in your glue gun. Download and print the leaf template onto white cardstock, then cut it out. The leaf template should be 3 3/8″ tall and 1 3/4″ wide.
Preparing The Wreath Form (5 minutes)
- You will want the start and end of the fabric wrap and any joints (from multiple fabric pieces) to be on the wreath front because it will be covered by the felt leaves. The back should be nice and smooth and have no joints.
- To start, dab a little hot glue on one end of the muslin strip, then place it on the wreath front. Press down and allow glue to harden for about 10 seconds.
- Start wrapping the muslin strip around the wreath, applying a dab of hot glue at the quarter, half, and three quarter points and anywhere you join muslin pieces. Only apply glue on the wreath front, which will be covered.
- Continue all the way around until the wreath form is completely covered. Cut the strip and glue in place on the wreath front.
Trace And Cut Felt Leaves (25 minutes)
Using your cardstock template, trace the pattern onto the felt as shown. You will need about 100 leaves for a 14″ wreath. This arrangement reduces fabric waste.
Cut out the felt leaves, making sure to cut off pencil markings.
Form The Leaves And Attach Them (25 minutes)
- To give the leaves a three-dimensional look, apply a dab of hot glue to the rounded (not pointy) end of a felt leaf. Then pinch it closed and hold for a few seconds until it holds together. Repeat for each leaf.
- Glue the leaves on with a dab of hot glue. The points should all point roughly (but not perfectly) in the same direction. Most of my “rows” are three to four leaves wide. Make sure to stagger the leaves to get a soft, natural look.
- Continue attaching the leaves until you have covered the wreath front and sides.
Finishing Up and Styling Of The Easy DIY Felt Leaf Wreath
If you like, you can glue a little ribbon to the top for hanging. I used a simple cream grosgrain ribbon.
Now for the fun part, styling! This wreath could be displayed just about anywhere because it is simple and neutral. I displayed ours above our bed, partly overlapping a beautiful sign with a winter quote. I chose to make a cream wreath which works perfectly for winter decor or Christmas decor if you decorate with white for Christmas. You could make this wreath in a different colour for other seasons of the year. Green, celadon, or peach for spring, navy or pink for summer, and taupe, rust, orange, or gold for autumn. I think I’ll wait until fall to make another one.

Hi l have tried doing this wreath by glueing leaves to polystyrene wreath from part of leaf where it has been glued together ie pinched part it just doesn’t go on very good l hope you can give me answers where l am going wrong many thanks adore your wreath
Shawna Liao says
Make sure you are using a hot glue gun, preferably a high-temperature glue gun. Did you wrap the polystyrene wreath in a thin cotton fabric first? That really helps the glue to stick permanently to the leaves. They will never fall off!
