September is nearly over, and this is the last of my fall room tours- I recently shared my orange and cream living room and my neutral-toned Master bedroom. I decided to use unconventional colours here to create an elegant blue fall family room. Our walls in this space are a soft shade of grey-blue, so I decided to embrace the blue this fall, adding shades of navy, cream, and wheat. Last fall I used an unconventional colour in this space too- to see my violet fall decor, click here.

Our family room is a mix of updated traditional and modern farmhouse styles which lends itself to adding layers of coziness. The more accessories I add, the more the space takes on a farmhouse feel. If I am more restrained with the accessories, then the look is more refined traditional.
Pillows and Pumpkins
One of my design secrets is to use pillows as a jumping-off point for decorating a space. Since I was determined to decorate this space without buying anything new, I perused my pillow cover collection to find pillows in shades of blue and white. I started with a pair of navy velvet pillows I DIYed and added a variety of blue and white patterned pillows.
In my opinion, fall is one of the easiest seasons to decorate for. Pumpkins are one of my favourite fall accessories. That’s why I added them in abundance in this space. I used a combination of faux pumpkins, painted in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Raw Silk, and fabric pumpkins. I made the fabric pumpkins in a pretty blue and white Japanese wave fabric. These pumpkins are a key ingredient in creating this elegant blue fall family room. I unified the space and kept it from looking too busy by only using these two types of pumpkins, interspersing them throughout the space. Click here to learn how to make these DIY fabric pumpkins.
Blanket Ladder and Small Table Decor
Fall is the perfect time to get out the blanket ladder and fill it with cozy blankets. For my super easy DIY blanket ladder tutorial, click here. I used a combination of blankets and scarves in shades of cream, navy, and grey. I didn’t have enough blankets in the desired colour scheme, so I raided my closet to find two plaid scarves that have the look of a cozy blanket.
To the small marble-topped table, I added two of my fabric pumpkins and a bundle of dried wheat. The wheat adds a little warmth to the space and creates contrast with the otherwise cool palette.
DIY Bench Slipcover
Other than the pumpkins, my main DIY project for this elegant blue fall family room is the bench slipcover. I’d hesitate to even call it a DIY as it only took 15 minutes to make from start to finish. I used the same Japanese wave fabric I used for the pumpkins. I created the fitted slipcover by making corner pleats and sewing a one-inch hem around.
Open Shelves and Corner Table Decor
The open shelves typically house a collection of neutral decor in shades of cream and grey. For fall, I simply added a few pumpkins. I printed a cute pumpkin sign from Snowberry Design Loft and put it in my Pottery Barn frame.
Fireplace Mantle
Again, I opted for simplicity in decorating our fall mantle. First, I filled two hurricane lanterns with faux white pumpkins and fabric pumpkins. Second, I added a row of three faux white pumpkins on the mantle. Finally, I hung a fabric banner from the mantle. These banners are available in my Etsy shop.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about how I created this elegant blue fall family room. Do you think you would try using an unconventional fall decor colour?
