One of the most fun, and sometimes more challenging, parts of decorating for the holidays is choosing the colour scheme. Should it be neutral, or traditional red, or something more out of the ordinary? This year, I decided to use elegant gold Christmas tree decor. I used some gold in my holiday decor a couple years ago and really loved the warmth and glow it gave the tree. You can read that post here. So this year, I added even more gold to the tree with ribbon and additional ornaments. Let’s start with a few questions you may be wondering about.

What Is So Special About Gold?
Gold has long been revered as a special colour, for its worth as a precious metal and for its association with royalty and ceremony. It’s special because it has a warm glow and sparkle that adds a festive touch to holiday decor. It reminds me of the warm glow and charm of candlelight. When the days get shorter and darker, gold decor can be a mood lifter and source of comfort. Gold ornaments reflect and amplify warm light from your tree lights.
How Do I Add Gold To The Tree?
There are countless ways to add gold to your tree decor. My favourite ways to do this are through ribbons, garlands, floral sprays, and ornaments. You don’t need to buy all new tree decor though. Spray paint can be used to turn ordinary floral and leaf sprays and ornaments gold. On our tree, I’ve used a combination of gold ribbon, sprays, and ornaments.
Can I Mix Gold With Other Colours?
Yes! Have you ever heard the song Silver and Gold? Well, that’s how well gold and silver go together. In other words, very well. Gold adds warmth and silver has a cool sparkle, but both are metallics that reflect light beautifully. I have successfully used gold with white, green, and mercury glass ornaments in the past. However, there are many more combinations that look lovely. Gold and red are classic, and gold and black are more modern. You can also play around with more unique combinations like gold and teal or jewel tones.
Elegant Gold Christmas Tree Decor
We have a nine-foot-tall flocked tree that fits our living room size and proportions. I began decorating our tree with a white feather garland and two types of gold/beige ribbon. To see how I progressively decorate this tree, visit my tree decorating post here.
After I added the garland and ribbons I started adding gold, white, silver, and mercury glass ornaments. I usually start with the largest ornaments first, spreading them out evenly over the tree. Then I progress to medium-sized and smaller ornaments. Lastly, I top the tree with a star and add a tree collar to the base.
I still have to wrap up the presents and place them under the tree. I have purchased wrapping paper and ribbon in shades of white and gold. Everyone loves the look of a tree with beautifully wrapped gifts underneath it.
Gold Accents In The Room
Whenever I use a dominant colour on my tree, I make an effort to add touches of that colour throughout our living room. This year, I added a gold lamp, some clear glass urns filled with gold ornaments, and gold-hued gift boxes stacked in front of an arched mirror.
