Have you ever wondered what your family room would look like if you changed the paint colour? Would it change the whole look? Could it make the space feel more modern and updated? In this post, Family Room Refresh With Paint, I share how I updated our family room by changing the paint colour on the walls and fireplace surround. I may have changed the accessories slightly, but that’s a common occurrence around here!

Backstory
When we first moved into our home, I couldn’t stand the colour that was on every single wall in our home- Bramble Tan. It was a mid-tone beige with pink undertones and I made it my mission to eradicate it room by room. Every new shade that went up on the walls was far better than what was there before and I felt such relief every time I looked at the walls. I enjoyed Behr Sparrow in our family room for many years.
Because of this, I never considered re-painting. However, I never loved the way Behr Sparrow looked against our cream kitchen cabinets. Along came the One-Room Challenge this past May/June and I painted the kitchen and breakfast area a lovely cream, Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee at 75%, inspired by the Studio McGee home. Since our family room, breakfast area, and kitchen are all part of one large great room, I knew I had to paint the family room the same colour. So I extended the Swiss Coffee colour into the family room as seen below.
The Fireplace
After painting the family room walls, I decided to have some fun with the fireplace surround. Life is too short to have the same fireplace colour forever! I wanted a dark colour that would provide some contrast and drama and also tie in with some of the other dark grey elements in our kitchen and breakfast area, like the counters and breakfast tabletop. It was easy to decide on Benjamin Moore Flint, a deep blue-grey colour with a masculine touch. I am the lone female in this family of five, and all my boys love this colour! I like how it modernizes the space, and I know I’m going to have fun with fall décor in here because deep grey pairs so well with gold and rust, colours I love for fall.
For those of you who have followed me for some time, I built the custom fireplace surround a few years ago. You can see my blog post about how to decorate a fireplace wall without built-ins here. I like how the fireplace is even more of a focal point now in its new dark grey shade. I also have a blog post on making and installing open shelves like the ones I used in our family room.
Accessories
I didn’t fuss too much with accessories at this point because it’s summer and I like to keep the decor simple during this time. Our boys are home all day every day and our focus is on family activities. Tables are covered with puzzles and lego, fort-building is always in progress, and the kitchen is a mecca of gelato and homemade pizza. So, I added a few brass candlesticks from Luvewant and white decorative items to the fireplace mantle, more plants to every available surface, and beautiful white and charcoal grey pillow covers from Tonic Living.
Summary
I hope you enjoyed reading about this little family room refresh with paint. Changing the paint colour of a family room can change the character and modernize a space. The best part is that it only takes a few hours to repaint a room, especially if it’s a small one like ours! I think I’ve gained a little confidence to go outside my comfort zone of whites, creams, and soft greys.
