Would you like to have a nicely pulled together holiday look for your front porch in only 20 minutes? Do you ignore decorating this part of your home because you aren’t sure what to do? Or do you buy nearly the same generic planter every year? If you’re looking for something a little different, but something reasonably affordable and very quick, you’re in the right place. I put together this farmhouse Christmas front porch décor in 20 minutes using almost entirely items I had on hand. I did make a couple of new purchases to complete the look and in this post, I share my exact sources for each item used.

The best time (and money) saving tip
You can substitute wherever you like and make additions that suit your unique style. See what you have on hand and place it in the front hall, then you can decide if you need to purchase additional items. I find the most efficient way to decorate is to come up with a plan (this blog post), evaluate what you have, make a list, and then go shopping or shop online. If I shop first, then I end up with a lot of things I don’t really need, and perhaps not enough of the things needed to create the look I want to achieve.
Our front porch
Our front porch is really tiny with just one step leading up to the landing and only a small overhang for shelter. However, a small size doesn’t mean the space needs to be boring, and a small space is usually much more affordable to decorate than a large space. This past spring, I painted our door with Benjamin Moore’s Silver Streak, a blueish grey or greyish blue paint.
Elements for a small porch
A small porch needs only a few elements to be successful, whereas a large porch requires a fair bit more. For example, a seating area and additional planters, trees, and décor are needed to make a larger space feel cozy. The main elements needed to make a small porch look festive for Christmas are a tree or planter, a garland, lanterns, mini lights, a wreath, and a welcome mat.

Outdoor tree in a galvanized bucket – 1 minute
This adorable tree has a blueish tint reminiscent of a blue spruce tree. It only takes a minute to place the tree in the bucket and plug it in. If the bucket is too deep for the tree, then place a few bricks or scrap wood in the bottom of the bucket to elevate the tree to the desired height.

Flocked garland around the door – 10 minutes
This part required a screwdriver, two small screws, floral wire and cutters, and a small ladder. This is the first year I have hung a garland around the door, and I wish I had done it years earlier. It was way easier than I thought it would be. To do this, affix two screws to the trim above the door (one above the left sidelight and one above the right sidelight). Then wrap some floral wire tightly around the left screw and form a wire loop for the garland to hang from. Repeat the process for the right side. You may need to trim away excess garland from the bottom. This is easy to do with floral cutters. I was able to reuse a small piece of trimmed garland on one of the lanterns.
This garland came decorated with the ball ornaments, but you could add your own if your garland is plain. Look for a garland that fits all the way around the sides and top of your door.

Layered welcome mats – 1 minute
The layered mat look is currently very trendy and it’s a fun way to create an inviting look. I mixed a thin, patterned rug with a thick, natural-fibre mat with the expression “Let it Snow”. Both mats are in shades of beige and black and work well together.

Magnolia wreath with mini wood sign – 4 minutes
Using floral wire, I added a cute little wood sign to a magnolia wreath and hung it from a wreath hanger to create a focal point for the door. To create this look you can use any greenery wreath, including a fresh evergreen wreath, and affix a small wood sign or a chalkboard to the wreath with floral wire.
I also added the aged bells to the door handle to add a festive and rustic touch.

Lanterns with candles – 1 minute
I used a couple of lanterns I already own and placed them on either side of the door mats. The lanterns don’t need to match, as long as they tie in with other elements. The black lantern ties in with the door hardware and house number plaque, and the grey/galvanized lantern ties in with the tree bucket, bells, and silver ornaments on the garland.

Birch logs wrapped with twinkle lights – 3 minutes
The birch logs add a final detail that reinforces the rustic look. I love how the twinkle lights add a little sparkle to this area at night. You can simply wrap the string of twinkle lights (fairy lights) around the logs (I used 3) and lean them up against the wall.

Do you have pictures of how you decorated with garland around your garage door?
Shawna Liao says
Thank you for your comment Janet. I’m sorry I don’t have photos of that, but I can tell you that I attached the garland to a screw in the center area above the middle of the garage door, then I draped it (not attached) over the light fixtures on either side of our garage. Very quick and easy!
