The modern farmhouse look is all about bringing the outdoors in, creating rustic charm, and balancing clean lines with comforting touches. In this post, How to get the modern farmhouse Christmas look, I’m sharing ideas from my own home. These are ideas that you can quickly incorporate into your home. Time is precious so close to Christmas, and that’s why I created this post for you. See my main floor Christmas Home Tour here.
How to get the modern farmhouse Christmas look:
Ticking stripe
This fabric lends itself to farmhouse décor, especially when used in casual applications like simple pillow covers, table runners, and Christmas stockings.
Candles
A couple of the more popular farmhouse applications are chunky candle bases topped with pillar candles (you can’t go wrong with white candles) and mason jar candles. These look lovely in a vignette with other items or grouped together, using candles of varying height.
Blankets
Nothing says modern farmhouse like a chunky knit neutral-toned blanket. Try a cozy cable-knit blanket, a chunky knit blanket, or a boucle throw. Anything that looks handmade and has a unique textural element will be perfect. Additionally, plaids and stripes also add that cozy, rustic farmhouse look.
Farmhouse-Style Pillows
These pillows are often printed on white cotton or unbleached natural (beige) cotton. They typically display a Christmas saying or cute image like a snowflake or Christmas tree. They add charm but are simple enough to fit in with your other décor.
Handmade Garland
Add a handmade garland made of beads, felt cutouts, or fabric strips to hang from the fireplace mantle or above a dining hutch. You can also hang garlands from the banister. Ready-made ones made of simple greenery look beautiful in any home. For some garland ideas, see my post Countdown to Christmas – 25 Family Activities for December.
Christmas Wreath Displayed Indoors
To instantly add that farmhouse look, take an old window or door (white and chippy with some exposed wood or old paint) and hang a simple wreath from it. Some of the best farmhouse wreaths are made of a single material- magnolia leaves, berries, or yarn. I like to display my wreaths in unexpected places- above the bed, on a coat hook in our front hall, or above our hood fan in the kitchen.
Vintage Items
Add vintage décor and vintage children’s toys to add interest and charm. Try adding vintage books, an old rocking horse, and antique candlesticks to add character.
Bring The Outdoors In
On the more rustic side of things, birch branches and pinecones are a great addition. For a more refined look, you can buy potted paper whites, amaryllis, and miniature boxwood wreaths. Fresh greenery, such a cedar or berries is always a welcome touch and can bring life to a neutral space.
Wood signs
Wood signs are one of my very favourite ways to create the modern farmhouse Christmas look. I adore my Christmas countdown sign and it’s something my boys look forward to seeing every year.
Stockings
Hang stockings in several places, not just by the fireplace. Add stockings to blanket ladders, front hall hooks, and at the foot of a bed.
Themed Christmas Trees
Both real trees and white-flocked faux trees fit the farmhouse style beautifully. I love the idea of having different Christmas trees in the home. The tree in our living room is usually our more formal vintage-inspired tree. We also have a couple of other trees throughout our home to decorate in different themes. Some of the farmhouse tree themes we have used are woodland creatures, red and white nutcracker, snowflakes and icicles, music and music scores, and vintage toys. Instantly give your tree a farmhouse look by displaying it in a galvanized metal bucket or a rustic basket. See my tree decorating tips in 5 Steps to a Gorgeous Christmas Tree.
Twinkle Lights
Add some twinkle lights to warm up your winter décor. I add twinkle lights everywhere- on garlands, blanket ladders, our Master bedroom headboard, around my children’s doorways, and in glass jars.
Outdoor Decor
Create an outdoor display that combines the magic of the season with the comforts and warmth of home. See how I created this outdoor look in only 20 minutes in my post Farmhouse Christmas Front Porch Décor in 20 Minutes. The farmhouse character of this space comes from the galvanized metal accessories (tree bucket and lantern), the birch logs (wrapped in twinkle lights!), the wood sign on the Magnolia wreath, and the layered rugs.
These are my top ways to get the modern farmhouse Christmas look. If “farmhouse” typically isn’t your style, the holidays can be a good time to try it out as you’ll likely be bringing in some new décor at this time anyways. I would love it if you could share with me your favourite idea on this list. Happy decorating!
