I love everything Citrus in summer, from my drinks to my decor, and today I’m sharing how I decorated our kitchen and breakfast area using lemony accents. This post, Lemon and Floral Summer Kitchen Decor, is part of a summer blog hop organized by Pasha from Pasha Is Home. If you are visiting from Tatertots and Jello, welcome! Wasn’t that disco ball planter just the most creative idea? At the end of this post, I hope you’ll visit all 10 of my friends who are participating today. This post contains affiliate links.
In this post, I’m going to be sharing some simple ideas on how to add some summer cheer to your home using lemons and florals and pretty yellow accents. These are ideas that you can put into play in just a few minutes. This decor is also budget-friendly and many of the items used here are available at your local grocery store or garden centre.
If you want to see how I decorated the rest of our home for summer, you can view that here.
A Little Yellow Goes A Long Way
You can see from this image of our kitchen that adding just a few yellow accents really makes the decor in this space pop. To keep the look calm and fresh, I used lots of white accents, a few wood tones, natural greenery, and a touch of blue. The yellow accents I used are sunflowers, lemons, lemon artwork, yellow buffalo check tea towels, and lemon patterned napkins.
Kitchen Island Centrepiece
There are only so many available spaces to decorate in a kitchen as cupboards and appliances occupy much of the space. Additionally, no one wants to clutter up all their countertops with decor. One of the best places to add decor and make an impact in the kitchen is the kitchen island. There is usually ample space and a pretty tiered tray makes use of vertical space. If you don’t have an island, then a stand-alone table can be used to display a tiered tray. Perhaps you have room for a console table or a smaller table to for a tiered tray.
For the tiered tray decor, I continued my colour scheme of white, wood tones, green, yellow, and a touch of blue. On the bottom tier, I used a real Eucalyptus plant I found at Home Depot, a basket full of lemons, lemon-themed cloth napkins, and a faux succulent. On the middle tier, I displayed a small white pitcher full of lamb’s ear from the garden, a Home Sweet Home wood block, and a mason jar with faux sunflowers. Finally, on the top tier, I used more lemons and a succulent, a candle, and a blue-tinted drinking glass.
When I style a tiered tray, I also like to add a couple of items beside the tray. I usually add two additional items to create a grouping of three. Here, I used a sedum potted plant and a wood frame with a pretty lemon print from Pink Lemon Decor.
Countertop Display
I like to keep countertop items to a minimum, generally limiting items to those that are both pretty and practical. On the countertop between the sink and stove, I displayed a soothing landscape painting replica from Minted, a pale blue cutlery holder, and a bowl of lemons. Using food in decor is economical and practical. I find that having lemons out in a bowl reminds me to use them more in my cooking and the boys will often ask me to make them some lemonade.
Add A Wreath
A wreath is a great way to add a personalized touch to your kitchen. My favourite place to display a wreath in my kitchen is above the range hood. I created this custom hood fan cover (read the DIY here) with the intention of always having a wreath on display here. If you’re able to create such a spot, then you’ll always have a unique focal point in your kitchen. If you have unadorned windows, then that can be another place to display a wreath, or you can hang mini wreaths from the backs of bar stools. I also added a yellow check tea towel to the oven pull.
Breakfast Area
I created this lemon tablescape for our family to enjoy. Since the table is open to our kitchen, I used the same colour scheme of white, green, yellow, wood tones, and blue. To add a little variety, I used slightly more blue for the tablescape than I did in the kitchen. This helps to tie this space to our family room decor which has blue accents for the summer.
Centrepiece
The centrepiece is a wooden box I made with pieces of pine, stain, and Fusion Mineral Paint (Raw Silk). I filled the box with lamb’s ear, succulents, sunflowers, small white flowers, and lemons. You can use egg cups or shot glasses to elevate the lemons within the arrangement and give them more presence. This centrepiece can be created using fresh flowers and plants or faux. I used faux because I already had these pieces on hand and I wanted the display to last. If you’re having a special event, you might create this centrepiece with real flowers and soaked floral foam. In that case, you would want to line the wood box with a plastic liner.
Place Settings
I decided to go with a multilayered approach for the place settings. I started with a blue and white striped placemat, followed by a woven rattan charger. Next, I place a large white stoneware plate and then a pretty blue and white patterned dinner plate. Each plate is topped with a faux lemon and some peony greens from the garden. I finished the table settings with some elegant glass goblets.
