Are you looking for fall decor ideas for your front porch? And are you looking for a neutral look that is anything but boring? In my post, Mostly Neutral Fall Front Porch Decor, I’m sharing how I decorated our small front porch with neutrals (beige, white, black, plus greenery) and a couple of muted orange accents and my signature blue door! I used a variety of textures and heights to create a visually pleasing porch vignette that you can put together in just minutes.

Inspiration For The Mostly Neutral Fall Front Porch Decor
The inspiration for this look came from a trip to a local garden centre. I had never been to the Robert Plante garden centre east of Ottawa and it turned out to be a great find and a lovely way to spend the afternoon with my youngest child. We also went to a farmer’s market and stopped for doughnuts afterwards which made it even lovelier.
I found some beautiful fall mums here and a tropical plant, Philodendron Birkin, which I will bring indoors when the weather starts to cool. In previous years, I have found that the mums I’ve purchased from local garden centres are better quality and can survive the entire fall season.
Colour Palette
We have a brick facade in shades of beige, brown, and golden sand. Because of the yellow zones in the brick, the best colours to decorate with are warm neutrals and warm vibrant colours like yellow, orange, and red. Blue, which is the complementary colour to yellow, also looks pretty good, especially when used in moderation. My front porch look from last year included vibrant shades of yellow and orange, so this year I wanted a more neutral look.
I used mostly neutrals, including beige, white, black, and greenery. I added a couple of muted orange accents and my blue door adds a pop of contrast.
Plant Vessels
Whenever I go neutral with my decor, I take extra care to add a variety of materials and textures. I used four different materials for plant vessels here- a large faux concrete planter on the left, a real cast iron urn in a traditional style (that I lugged across the province when we moved 20 years ago), and a repurposed wicker laundry basket on the right. Behind the urn is a small fluted concrete planter.
On the left side of the door, I repeated some of the materials used on the right side. I used a smaller version of the faux concrete planter, a seagrass basket, and an apple-picking basket. Using repetition like this helps to give continuity to the space and makes the look more cohesive.
The Plants
On the right side, I used white and muted orange mums, as well as a tall perennial grass plant. I will transplant the grass plant into the ground before winter comes so it will come back again next spring. I placed the grass plant on a small outdoor table to create additional height and give the overall look a variety of heights.
On the left side of the door, I used another white mum, plus the tropical Philodendron Birkin plant and an ornamental cabbage. The cabbage plant is slowly being nibbled to nothing by our resident rabbits, so it’s not going to last long.
Pumpkins, Leaves, and Lanterns
For any porch look I’m creating, I try to choose just a few key accessories and repeat them throughout the space. This year, I chose white and cream pumpkins (and one muted orange one), faux oak leaves, and lanterns. I used a mix of faux white pumpkins and an orange raffia pumpkin to add colour and texture. As the season progresses, I will add some real pumpkins.
I tucked oak leaves around the base of the pumpkins which adds another height dimension to the look. The white lanterns flank both sides of the porch and add a nice welcoming touch.
Finishing Touches For The Mostly Neutral Fall Front Porch Decor
Did you notice my wreath switcharoo? Partway through taking photos I made this cute white sunflower wreath for the front porch. I think it ties in really well with the neutral elements of my porch, including the white pumpkins and lanterns.
I used a simple black and white buffalo check doormat. The addition of black makes this look bolder and will work equally as well for Halloween and Thanksgiving. This doormat is around 2′ by 3′ in size and covers a good portion of our tiny front porch.
Summary
So what did you think of my mostly neutral fall front porch decor? I hope you have enjoyed reading about how I decorated this outdoor living space. Happy decorating!
