Welcome to my neutral and natural fall home tour, which showcases the front part of our home and how I’ve styled it for early fall. I’ll take you through the front hall, living room and dining room and share ideas on bringing a little fall into your home. This post is part of an early fall home tour organized by Pasha from Pasha is Home. Thank-you Pasha! And thank-you to Kristin of White Arrows Home for sending you this way. At the end of this post, check out all the other homes on this inspiring tour.
Fall Decor Inspiration
I’m always inspired by nature and the beautiful colours and textures displayed throughout the year in many settings. As I write this post, I’m enjoying a stunning lake view at a cottage and appreciating the blues, greys, and greens and also noticing the hints of fall in a few golden leaves here and there. However, the inspiration for my early fall home tour comes from this vintage-inspired framed print of a pink flower. The pale pink flower colour with the subdued golden-olive leaves captures the muted tones that are currently inspiring me. My colour scheme encompasses muted tones of pink, green, orange, beige, and brown, as well as a surprise pop of more vibrant colour in our dining room. Sometimes that’s the way nature celebrates colour too.
I happened to have these pale pink hydrangeas remaining from a wedding floral project I completed the day before I photographed this home tour. I mixed them with some white hydrangeas from our garden resulting in the real-life realization of the image in the gold frame.
Front Hall
I kept the front hall pretty simple, with tone-on-tone white artwork and accessories on the shelf and a couple of cream-coloured pillows and a throw on the bench. Then I added a muted orange pillow and one of my handmade hydrangea wreaths in shades of orange and cream. The elongated pillow has a subtle pumpkin motif but overall the look is subtly introducing the idea of fall.
Living Room
I used only muted shades in the living room- beige, cream, soft brown, and muted pink. The look is very calming and restful. I used a variety of textures and shapes to keep things interesting.
Area Rug Colour Scheme
For this room, it was easy to use the rug as a source of colours. The rug contains shades of cream, beige, brown, and pink and I echoed these colours in the artwork and accessories used throughout the space.
Affordable Florals
To save money, I used a mix of faux florals that can be used year after year, and real blooms mostly from the garden. The neutral arrangement on the coffee table contains faux eucalyptus, white sunflowers, and other faux flowers. The living arrangements I used in the space contain hydrangeas from the garden and affordable baby’s breath. Stores like Michaels offer great sales, especially at the end of the season. You can also find faux flowers for next to nothing at yard sales and thrift shops.
Fabulous Textiles
For this little textile vignette on the sofa, I used a variety of interesting fabrics. The sofa is upholstered in a pure linen fabric (read the upholstery DIY post here) and provides a neutral backdrop for the pillows and fabric pumpkins. I used a variety of my handmade fabric pumpkins in shades of beige, brown, and gold to pick up some of the colours in the pink pillow. Finally, I placed a few faux oak leaves between the pumpkins for a neutral, natural touch.
The Piano as a Decor Focal Point
We don’t have a fireplace in our living room, so the large window and the piano serve as focal points. I decorated the mantle with some nature-inspired accessories. Placing a large piece of artwork above the piano also gives the piano a greater presence in the space. You can see how I updated our piano from orange 1970s style to this pretty cream look here.
Dining Room
We are about halfway through the neutral and natural fall home tour and are moving on to the dining room. As you can see, it’s mainly beige, grey, and cream with touches of black and dark brown and a few pops of yellow. Sometimes when I have a really neutral backdrop, I like to add a bit of unexpected colour. Maybe it comes from my love of vintage colourized postcards. I love how the painted-on colours come alive against the black-and-white background.
Create a Centerpiece
When the dining table isn’t being used for family dinners or dinner parties, why not add a pretty linen tablecloth and seasonal centrepiece? I created this centrepiece with faux florals and pumpkins placed in a wooden box I made. To add even more texture to the space I knitted a simple runner to place under the centerpiece box.
The Bar Cart
I decorated the bar cart with faux leaves, mini pumpkins, a candle, and copper accessories for a warm and inviting look. Copper is one of my favourite materials for fall decorating. It adds lustre and a beautiful warmth to any space.
The Buffet and Open Shelves
To this space, I added some wheat, a vintage-look DIY chalkboard, and a basket of faux pumpkins. I recently made over an old picture frame, turning it into a chalkboard and you can read the DIY post here. I almost always store white dishes and crockery on these shelves.
