Are you looking for a quick coastal refresh for a bedroom in your home? It could be a guest bedroom, a child’s or teen’s room, or even the Master bedroom. Seaside decor can be subtle and calming and that’s exactly what I tried to capture in this room refresh. If you have a few hours to update a room, then you can do this. In this post, Neutral Coastal Bedroom Refresh, I’m sharing how to create neutral bedroom decor inspired by the seaside. If you want to add an extra layer to this room refresh and add board and batten, you can read my tutorial here.

Before Photo
My eldest son’s room was last decorated shortly after we moved into our home. I think he was about four years old, so I used bolder colours and more vivid patterns. Having just moved into our new build, I wanted to add character to the space, so I applied a faux board and batten treatment to the bottom two-thirds or so portion of the wall. I painted the board and batten a crisp white and the upper portion of the wall a rich blue. I purchased a classic black antique reproduction bed and added some blue and white bedding and accessories. After over a decade the decor was starting to look tired so I did a quick half-day neutral coastal bedroom refresh.
The Work Plan For This Neutral Coastal Bedroom Refresh
There were several things I wanted to change in this bedroom refresh, but only one of them required a few hours of my time. This was the not-too time-consuming job of painting the wall above the board and batten. The rest of the work was just planning and a little bit of shopping.
Here’s the list of things I wanted to accomplish:
- Declutter and dust everything
- Paint upper part of wall a soothing grey-blue colour
- Replace the bedding with something more neutral
- Add ocean-inspired artwork above the bed
- Replace the side table and lamp
- Reorganize the shelves and add some plants
Neutral Coastal Bedroom Refresh: After Photos
I am so pleased with how the refresh turned out and relieved that it only took half a day. The whole space looks so much fresher, less cluttered, and even more spacious. The hardest part was just getting started and doing the decluttering and cleaning. I removed everything except for the main furniture pieces in the room and then was able to do a good cleaning of surfaces, baseboards, and carpet.
Paint Colour
I chose this soothing grey-blue colour, Smoke, by Benjamin Moore. I’ve always wanted to paint something this colour and it was really calming adding this colour to the walls. Painting is a favourite activity of mine and seeing this beautiful colour go up on the walls was really satisfying. Incredibly, the board and batten wall treatment was in near perfect condition and didn’t require repainting or touching up.
Bedding
I actually choose this bedding set before I chose the paint colour because I fell in love with it. The neutral being tones remind me of the colour of sand at the beach. I found this gorgeous bedding set (including everything except the frontmost pillow) from Beddy’s Bedding. It’s the Davis Luxe set and included the zippered bedding set/comforter, quilted blanket, five pillow covers, and three pillow inserts. My code WILLOWBLOOM will get you 15% off any set of your choice. The dark grey blanket and pillow help to keep the decor more grounded and bridge the gap between the lighter decor and the black bed frame.
I love all the pillows that came with the set but chose to use one of the pillows (a rich amber pleather) in another space, instead adding one of my homemade pillows to the mix. The small bolster pillow in front was made with some leftover fabric I had from Tonic Living. The fabric pattern is called Sparrow and it’s a pretty mix of beige with squiggly grey stripes.
Coastal Artwork
I found these pretty coastal prints and white frames from Poster Store. My son chose the pieces that he wanted for his room. We’ve been taking summer vacation at the Great Lakes and other beautiful seaside locations since he was a baby and many of his favourite childhood memories involve building sandcastles and splashing in the water. I chose these petite frames (32 cm by 42 cm) to fit neatly in the space above his bed.
Side Table
I updated the Hemnes side table by painting it the same white as the walls (C2 Paint Sheer) and adding a weathered brass pull from Lee Valley Tools. The side table, lamp, clock, and faux plants are all IKEA finds. The plant pot is from The Dollar Store. And the storage basket is from Canadian Tire. I spent very little on the side table decor and artwork and splurged a bit more on the items I wanted to last a long time- the bed over a decade ago and the top-quality bedding from Beddys.
Shelf Organization
The shelving unit is the affordable Fjallbo from IKEA. We decided to keep the wood crates on the bottom shelves for book storage and added some seaside touches and plants. For this, we shopped our home and didn’t have to buy anything new. I propagated the plants from bigger plants, gathered seashells into a hurricane lantern, and displayed starfish and driftwood. All the accessories used were in neutral, natural tones.
