Hello friends! I created this post to solve the problem of where to store your family’s stash of clean face masks. This quick and easy DIY mask hanger will get your masks organized and all in one place. You can install this near the door using non-marking adhesive strips, and always be ready to head out the door. No more scrambling to find a mask when you’re in a hurry.

This mask hanger does double duty as a mask drying rack so you can avoid putting masks in the dryer and possibly shrinking them. And when this Covid nightmare is over, the hanger can be repurposed for storing keys, dog leashes, scarves, or children’s jackets.
This project can be complete in about 30 minutes plus paint/stain drying time. The difficulty level is Easy!
Supplies for the quick and easy DIY mask hanger
- 0.75″ thick pine wood pieces- 16″ by 3.5″ and 16″ by 2.5″
- 1.25″ tall pine trim piece- 16″ long
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Brad nail gun (and air compressor), 1.25″ 18 gauge brad nails OR hammer, small finishing nails, and countersink tool
- Safety goggles
- 220 grit sandpaper
- Stain (I used Homestead House Stain and Finishing Oil Driftwood) or paint
- 1″ paintbrush and clean cotton cloth
- Awl
- 5 metal hooks and screws
- Screwdriver
- 3M Command strips for hanging
Directions for the quick and easy DIY mask hanger
Preparation
- Cut all three wood pieces to 16″ long.
- Lay out wood pieces and hooks to ensure you have a pleasing arrangement and that wood pieces line up perfectly.
Assembly
- First attach trim piece at the top of the 3.5″ by 16″ wood piece, ensuring that the tops of both pieces are flush.
- To do this, apply wood glue to the top of the trim piece, lay it on the wood piece, then deploy 3 evenly spaced brad nails through the trim and into the wood piece. I used one at each end and one in the middle.
- Next, apply wood glue to the top edge of the pieces you just attached together. This is the surface that the top shelf piece will rest upon.
- Lay the top shelf piece (2.5″ by 16″ piece) on top of the glue so that the back side of the unit is flush. Deploy five brad nails into the shelf piece, so that the brad nails go into the wood piece below. You may need some assistance to keep the wood lined up perfectly as you deploy the brad nails.
- Allow the glue to dry according to the directions on the package.
- Lightly sand the piece before staining or painting.
Staining and adding the hooks
- Stain or paint the front, top, and sides of the piece using your favourite stain or paint.
- I used Homestead House Stain and Finishing Oil in Driftwood because it’s so easy to use. I simply apply the stain using a small chip brush, allow to dry for five minutes, then wipe clean with a cotton cloth.
- Allow your stain or paint to dry according to the package directions.
Attach the hardware
- To attach the hardware, first lay the hooks out evenly spaced on the finished wood unit.
- Mark the location of the holes with an awl.
- Screw in the screws using the appropriate screwdriver.
- Hang on the wall with 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips.
Styling
- Hang your masks from the hooks. We are a family of five, so we each have a designated hook, from youngest on the left to oldest on the right.
- There is space on the shelf above for practical items like hand sanitizer or you could add a cute decorative touch like these fabric pumpkins. Check out my tutorial on how to make these pumpkins.
- I created a mudroom “station” with the mask hanger, clock, hanging metal basket with message board, and garbage can.
I also added some fun fall decor to our mudroom, including some faux pumpkins, a vase with fall berries, festive pillows, and a fall wreath. The tutorial for the wreath can be found here.
I hope you have liked this quick and easy DIY mask hanger and seeing how my fall mudroom decor came together.
